He Intercedes for Us
The second reading this week is short, but it packs a whole lot of punch:
Brothers and sisters:
The Spirit comes to the aid of our weakness;
for we do not know how to pray as we ought,
but the Spirit himself intercedes with inexpressible groanings.
And the one who searches hearts
knows what is the intention of the Spirit,
because he intercedes for the holy ones
according to God’s will.
It speaks to all the times when we can't find the right words in prayer. The times when we can't face God because we can't face ourselves. It reassures us to the presence of the Holy Spirit and his desire to communicate the deepest depths of our hearts to God. He wants us to be heard.
No prayer can ever fully express our praise or gratitude or longing or repentence...but that's okay! St. Paul tells us that the Spirit can fill the void of our weakness and help communicate our intention to God. All we need to do is open our heart and spend that time with Him.
